New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
