Everyone Are Welcome to Be the Extra Haim Sisters Bandmate.

"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're not alone. Several celebrated admirers have publicly coveted the position.

The evidence suggests something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos frequently depict them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Award Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

However Haim will always be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
